Rolling out from: East Perth Train Station

Start time: 7:00am

Duration: 2 hours 30 mins

The first full moon after the Autumnal equinox is THE sign that #crossiscomming.

Short of a global pandemic or a ruptured appendix, it should be time to ask WWJD if he was blessed with a CX bike.

So as the Three Kings of Cross (MUD, SAND and STAIRS) head towards the fabled southern lands for the 2021 cyclocross season, it’s officially time dust off your cross (bike), top up your (tubeless) sealant* and replace the chain (you can thank me later).

Meeting point is at the East Perth train station (Swan River side, just in the car park) Just look for a posse of likely looking riders with wider than normal tyres.

The first official CX ride of 2021, it will be a no drop ride along the Swan and Helena Rivers. All up, the ride will be about 50kms. We will explore a few of this season’s CX courses while we are out and about.

So if you are new to the joys of CX, please join in and you will see parts of Perth you never knew you can actually ride a bike with 33/35mm tyres.

Importantly there will be an ice cold #bushchook or two at the end. However, if getting a coffee on Cross Friday is your thing you can head up to straight to Rifo’s Cafe in Maylands as it is normally open and has plenty of seats. Then come back for a refreshing tinny of the divine bush chook. But if you’re favourite purveyor of fine coffee is open – enjoy.

* A few suffer. On previous editions of this ride, there were a few punctures so bring two tubes if you are using tubes tyres. If you have a tubeless setup, don’t forget to top up the sealand  – this should be done every 3 months as a minimum.

Cyclocross – what the hell is it? It looks like fun, but where does one start? If you have asked these questions and need the answers, this will be for you!

This is aimed at CX newlings, especially women as we at WACX love to see women race cross hard.

Skills that can be covered include dismounts, remounts, barriers, stairs, sand, cornering, starts, shouldering, handups, cowbell ringing and heckling.

So bring your bike (cyclocross or mountain bike is fine), your kids and their bikes, some wine, cheese and don’t forget your helmet!

See you there!

Firstly a massive thanks to the TOWN OF CAMBRIDGE for allowing us to use Perry Lakes Areas 5 and 6 again at such late notice. It will be interesting to see what the course is like during the middle of winter with more rain forecast, not the usual 33C dry and late summer conditions.

It will be a fast course in mid Autumn like conditions (if we lived in Europe) and a bit of rain will certainly make it interesting. Enter early, encourage your mates to join in the fun.

Last day of the current COVID restrictions remember:

– Masks will no longer be required in outdoor public spaces where physical distancing is possible, bring one any way.
– Indoor and outdoor community sport can resume. Spectators will be permitted in line with the 150 person limit, so disperse around the course.
– Don’t forget to scan the QR code when you arrive.

Bring your CX bike and stay for the parmy. Unfortunately the Beverly Heroic in no more, but WACX can still keep the cross fires burning! It’s a great course, a fun event and as WACX takes ‘cross to the county.

Race twilight Saturday, dust yourself off and race Sunday morning – well, that’s the plan.

Currently subject to a bunch of approvals – TBC

Bring your RID – the mozzie are ferocious at dusk

It’s a great course, the tennis club has a cold beer and puts on a great sausage sizzle – nothing can beat choosing between the upper and lower for a parmy and a jug (or go to both).

Camping: TBC (fingers crossed)

Country cyclocross for all the family. Experience the great outdoors on a sweet CX course, along the banks of the mighty Avon River in Beverley.

In conjunction with the Beverley Heroic, we at WACX though it would be an ideal time to escape the city and bring a little cowbell action to the country and have a little CX knees up.

An ideal excuse to stay the night and enjoy some country hospitality, before being Heroic the following day.

Something like this will occur
  • 1520-1540 U9 half course event – 15mins
  • 1550-1610 U15 & U13 full course event – 20mins
  • 1620-1650 CX Curious – any bike with working brakes, 25mins
  • 1700-1750 SSCX & CX Heroic – cyclocross bike only, 45mins

The tennis club will be opening the bar and sausages will be sizzled, placed lovingly in a roll (with or with onions) with a fine selection of sauces to choose. WACX will bring along a Curry and Frites sauces to add a little extra European flavour (we’ll remember this year!).
