Lake Gwelup Reserve, Gwelup
Four seasons in one day. That’s what riders were lucky enough to experience at Round 3 of the Liquor Barons Numbat Cup Series at Lake Gwelup. There was some heavy downpours that sent spectators looking for cover. Then minutes later is was glorious sunshine. Exactly 200 riders braved all the conditions that were thrown their way and ripped around the testing and sandy course. There may also have been some hidden roots under the trees that caught more than a few riders out.
New volunteers step up
Our chief wrangler of all things ‘cross, Stuart, was working offshore this week so we were very thankful that a huge number of new volunteers stepped up to help us run today’s racing. WACX races are 100% volunteer-run, so we rely on the generosity of our community.
Thank you to Craig, Michael, Claudia, Toby, Tanya B, Tanya M, Simon and Nathan for assisting with rego desk duties today. What a team. With so many volunteers stepping up it meant that each person was only needed for 1 hour.
Course crossing duties were covered by Ben, Patrick and an unknown gentleman who had prime position to watch the on-course action with a camp chair.
Thanks to Ash for MC and call-up duties, alongside Bryan. And to Sam who stepped in to assist with call-ups alongside her AusCycling commissaire duties.
And don’t forget the huge crew who rolled in at 8am this morning to build the amazing course that all riders got to enjoy for the day.
And finally, thanks to Mark and Andrew took on the all-important task of running the timing tent today. As it was their first time without Stuart’s steady guiding hand, there were a few stressful moments and a little glitch in the kids race, but all-in-all, things went well. Phew!
Clothing donations
We put the call out this week for members of the WACX community to donate cycling clothing that they no longer use. The donations aim to help upcoming junior riders and those who may be new to cycling.
Thank you to those who contributed to the donations. The smiles on the faces of all the riders who were lucky enough to score themselves a new kit was great to see. We’ll be bringing this back out at the next round, so keep an eye out.
Photographers in the wild
Stacy from Stack Art Photography was close to the action all day today. Keep an eye on her socials in the coming days for when she posts the album from the race. Pain faces aplenty.
Up next – LADIES’ DAY
The next round of the Liquor Barons Numbat Cup Series marks the celebration of Ladies’ Day. We’ll be racing at Guildford Meadow on the banks of the Swan River on Sunday 29 June.
Ladies’ Day is all about highlighting and celebrating and female participation in our great sport. Last year’s Ladies’ Day attracted 50 ladies to the start line. Please help us smash this number in 2025!
It will be a party atmosphere, with champagne, sparkling apple juice and cupcakes. Not to mention good vibes and a fun day. So encourage the ladies in your life to come down and give cyclocross a go.
Once entries are open, we’ll post the link in the Calendar. If you’ve already registered for the entire Numbat Cup Series, you don’t need to do anything. Just remember to have your race plates fitted to your bike.
Results
* Timing gremlins struck during the kids race today, so we have missed the final laps of some riders. Apologies. We hope all kids enjoyed ripping around today’s course.
