Cyclocross for
Kids & Juniors

At WACX, cyclocross is about fun, participation, and community first. That’s especially true for our kids and juniors events.

The Numbat Cup Series is designed to help young riders discover the joy of riding bikes, build confidence and skills, learn the basics of cyclocross racing, and make friends along the way. Whether it’s their first ever event or they’re already keen to challenge themselves, there’s a place for them here.

Our junior pathway is simple and supportive, with two key categories: Little Crossers and Young Guns.

AusCycling membership

But before we dive right in, let’s cover off the essentials.

All riders (kids, juniors and adults) need to have a valid and current AusCycling membership to participate in our events. It’s a requirement for insurance and safety, and applies to every rider, with no exceptions.

You’ll be required to show the valid membership at check-in for each event.

Read more about accepted AusCycling membership types.

Little Crossers

Little Crossers is our kids-only participation event, and it’s all about fun.

The goal is for kids to simply have fun riding their bike, build confidence, increase bike handling skills, make friends and finish feeling proud and smiling!

What to expect

  • No timing and no placings recorded
  • Every finisher gets a lollypop to celebrate their achievement
  • 20-minute session, where the kids can ride as many or as few laps as they like
  • A shortened course (approx. 1km in length), adjusted from the main course so parents can generally see their kids at all times

Who can ride?

  • Targeted at kids aged 12 and under
  • 13-14 riders who may be new to the sport or on a non-cyclocross bike (eg. mountain bike) are also welcome
  • All bikes welcome – including balance bikes
  • Helmets mandatory

Entry information

  • Free entry for every event
  • One-off $15 fee for a Little Crossers WACX number plate that the kids can keep and use at each event. This will be issued at the rego tent when you come to your first event.
  • All kids participating must have a valid and current AusCycling membership*
  • Pre-registration highly encouraged. It can be very busy on event day, so please pre-register to help our volunteers
  • When entries are open you’ll find the link in our Event Calendar
  • On-the-day entries are discouraged, but will be accepted. Please arrive at least 1 hour prior to start time

* AusCycling offers a 4-week free trial membership. Some of our events are only 3 weeks apart, so if you sign-up for the free membership at the right time, it can be used for two events.

Little Crossers is the perfect introduction to cyclocross. It’s welcoming, inclusive, and all about enjoying bikes.

Young Guns

Young Guns is our junior racing category. While the focus remains on fun, learning and participation, riders are introduced to competitive bike racing in a supportive environment.

What to expect

  • Raced on the full cyclocross course
  • Electronic race timing
  • Lap times, finishing positions and podiums
  • Separate male and female races
  • Target race duration of around 30 minutes

Who can ride?

  • Experienced 11-12 year olds may move up from Little Crossers after consultation with the race director
  • Cyclocross and gravel bikes only – drop bars and maximum 42mm tyre width
  • If unsure, the friendly WACX team is always happy to chat with parents and juniors to help find the right fit

Entry information

  • $25 per race
  • One-off $15 fee for a race plate and timing transponder
  • All juniors participating must have a valid and current AusCycling membership
  • Pre-registration required

We aim to create a safe and welcoming environment for young riders by encouraging skill development and confidence. Teaching the basics of cyclocross racing and etiquette builds a strong junior community that grows with the sport.

So whether your child is just learning, or ready to challenge themselves with some competitive racing, the Numbat Cup Series has a place for them.

If you have questions or aren’t sure which category is right, please reach out.
