New equipment rules for 2025 Numbat Cup Series

The 2025 WACX season is set to be bigger and better than ever, and we’re making some exciting updates to our equipment regulations to encourage even more people to get involved in our beloved sport.

For the Liquor Barons Numbat Cup Series we are relaxing our equipment rules for all grades except for the recognised UCI categories – Elite, U23, and Junior (U19).

The change reflects the growing popularity of gravel bikes and aims to make cyclocross racing more accessible to a wider range of riders.

What’s changing?

For races that are part of the 2025 Liquor Barons Numbat Cup Series, the following equipment rules will apply:

Elite category:

As the only UCI-recognised category we run in our Numbat Cup Series races, standard cyclocross regulations remain in place. This means:

  • Tyres must have a maximum width of 33mm
  • Drop handlebars are required, with a maximum width of 500mm

All other cyclocross categories:

  • Tyres can be up to 42mm in width
  • Drop handlebars are still required, but there is no maximum width

This applies to all of our Masters categories, our standard B and C grades, and our Young Guns (U15/U17).

Open category:

Got a mountain bike or a beefy gravel bike with huge tyres (wider than 42mm in width)? Don’t worry, we haven’t forgotton about you. Our ‘Open’ category is available for anyone racing a bike that doesn’t fit into the other categories that we offer. So there’s definitely no excuse not to get out there and give it a go!

What about kids racing?

Our kids racing, for U9 – U13s, is all about participation and fun. All bikes are welcome. From balance bikes, to BMX, mountain bikes, and anything in between, they’re all welcome.

Why the change?

Encouraging more participation – with many riders now using gravel bikes, these changes will allow more people to experience the fun and challenge of cyclocross racing.

Aligning with National Standards – these updates bring WACX in line with AusCycling’s National Cyclo-cross Series, ensuring consistency across events in Australia.

We’re excited to welcome even more riders to the WACX racing scene this season! Whether you’re a seasoned racer or just keen to give cyclocross a try, these changes will make it easier than ever to join in on the action.

See you on the course!
